Women Miss Out on University Places

Older women are more likely not to be accepted when applying to University, a study has revealed.

Mature female students are less likely to receive placements.

A UCAS study found, mature women were most likely to appear in the “non-placed applicants” groups and “withdrawn” and “no-offer” categories

Ethnic minority groups also made up an astounding 37.5 percent of all non-placed applicants.

The unsuccessful applicants tended to be older, poorer and hold non-traditional qualifications.

Bill Rammell Higher Education Minister commented that the survey results were important because it enabled the government to find out why people end up without a university place.

“It’s absolutely crucial that we gain a better understanding of why certain groups of young people are less likely to be placed at the end of the application process than others, so we can ensure that everyone who has the potential to go into higher education are given every opportunity to do so.”
